"I know that we need diversity in the Senate, and we need people who come to the job who really want to make a difference for the county, and when I look across the country, I see women who understand that."

Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee Chair Patty Murray (D-Wash.) on 2012 elections. (via politicista)
Amen!

Sending warm birthday wishes to Senator Amy Klobuchar (MN)! What better way to say happy birthday than to show some support for her campaign?
Click here for a video of the Senator (along with colleagues Sen. Barbara Boxer (CA) and Sen. Patty Murray (WA)) urging for the reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act.
I know, I know. I am a bit of a failure.
My last post was in December 2011 and I am well aware that a LOT of things have been happening in the arena of women and politics since then. But I am back, and in the coming weeks this blog will be back up and running in full force (I promise!!)
So what had I been up to in the past four months that completely distracted me from my feminist-political-junkie-blogger status?
I was studying abroad in London, and not only that, but also doing an internship with a member of Parliament. It was a fantastic, eye-opening experience and I came out if it with a great appreciation for the way the Brits do things (but more on that a little later). Needless to say, it’s great to be back in the swing of American politics -especially with the 2012 elections starting to heat up!
For now, some of my favorite women-in-politics happenings in past few months:
• President Obama urges more women to run for Congress.
• Texts from Hillary, Hillary without makeup, basically everything having to do with our one and only Secretary of State.
• This video.
And some recent not-so-favorite happenings:
• War on Caterpillars?
• Congress’ basic butchery of the Violence Against Women Act.
• The House Subcommittee’s refusal to let Eleanor Holmes-Norton testify at a hearing regarding abortion restrictions in DC.
The road to November will be long and windy (with some May and June primaries on the way) but who’s ready to get more women in office?

Interested in leadership or learning how to RUN FOR OFFICE? Check this out! Lifetime TV and Senator Kirsten Gillibrand have teamed up for an event called “Getting Off the Sidelines: A Conversation about the Urgency of Women’s Political, Community and Business Leadership Today” at Hofstra University this Friday, December 2nd. The event marks the launch of the 2012 Every Woman Counts Campaign, andwill feature some truly inspirational women including Geri Barish, founder and President of the 1 in 9 Foundation; Sam Bennett, President and CEO of the Women’s Campaign Fund and She Should Run; and Tiffany Dufu, President of the White House Project!
Wanna jump in and get involved? Join the Facebook event and RSVP by December 1st at (212) 351-0306. Let’s get more women in office next year!
